Further information to help with your car rental from Sarajevo Downtown

After you’ve collected your hire car from Green Motion Sarajevo Downtown, we know that you will be ready to get your car on the road and explore the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Enjoy your car hire in Sarajevo

If this is your first time driving a car in Bosnia and Herzegovina, our advice is to stay calm and take your time. As already mentioned, remember to drive on the right and we’d also recommend for your own peace of mind to consider hiring a GPS to ensure you can navigate around the capital with ease (ask at the rental counter for details).

There are no toll roads in Bosnia and Herzegovina and aside from the dual carriage just outside Sarajevo, there are no other dual carriages in the country.

Parking in Sarajevo is relatively easy to find, most of the parking areas have meters. Remember to take extra care if you are driving a vehicle during Sarajevo’s coldest months (between November – April) as the roads can be quite slippery, especially if you are driving in the outward areas.

When travelling on the motorways the speed limit is 120 km/h. The speed limit outside towns is 80 km/h and 60 km/h in built-up areas. For your own safety it is important that you obey the local traffic and speed restrictions.

Should you require any assistance while in Sarajevo, Bosnian and Herzegovinian emergency services can be contacted by calling 122 for police, 123 for fire fighters and 124 for medical services.

Yes, this is possible. If you booked through our website please contact our reservations team on however there is no guarantee that we will be able to amend your booking but we will try our best to help.

Do I need to leave a deposit when renting my car?
Yes, in all cases the main driver will be required to leave a deposit which will be taken by the method of pre-authorisation from the credit card presented. The level of pre-authorisation taken is dependent on the type of insurance purchased and the agreed excess. Typically the level of pre-authorisation required will mirror the level of agreed excess. In the cases where the hirer has selected a zero excess option, a small deposit / pre-authorisation will be required to cover any traffic violations including parking and speeding offences that may occur while the hire vehicle is in the custody of the hirer.

We would ask you to note that all pre-authorisation’s are released on the completion of the hire following a satisfactory review of the vehicle and its condition noting that any damaged caused to the vehicle while out on hire will be subject to cost with the relevant amount being removed from the pre-authorisation.

Typical deposits / pre-authorisations can range from £150 GBP to £1500 GBP dependent on the car type, age and driving experience of the driver and agreed excess.

Can I reduce my excess?

Green Motion Sarajevo Downtown offers their rental customers the opportunity to reduce their excess by purchasing one of our excess reduction packages. Each package provides different benefits ranging from reduction in excess to zero excess. Please ask at the rental counter for more information.

Which payment and debit cards does Green Motion accept?
In most cases, each Green Motion location will accept most major credit cards including Visa and MasterCard and in some cases, American Express may be accepted.

In relation to debit cards (Visa), these are typically accepted for the payment of rentals but unfortunately we cannot secure a deposit / pre-authorisation using a debit card and as such require a valid credit card for the pre-authorisation of the deposit. In addition we are unable to accept cash either for the payment of the rental or for the security deposit.

We would ask you to note that in the event that we are unable to guarantee funds relating to the security deposit on your credit card we will be unable to rent a vehicle to you.

How long do I wait for the release of a deposit / pre-authorisation?

Green Motion Sarajevo Downtown does not hold the pre-authorisation / deposit in our bank accounts. The pre-authorisation is a block of the agreed amount held against the credit card presented by the issuing bank. As soon as the vehicle has returned and we are happy with the condition of the vehicle, we action a release of the pre-authorisation.

The time taken by the issuing bank to release the pre-authorisation on the credit card varies immensely dependent on the bank and the country of issue. Typically, most pre-authorisations / deposits are released within 5 – 14 days from the return of the rental car.

In the event that you feel a pre-authorisation has not been released with the prescribed time frame it will be necessary for you to make direct contact with the issuing bank as Green Motion Sarajevo Downtown has no jurisdiction in this matter.

Is roadside assistance including with my rental car?

In most cases, Green Motion Sarajevo Downtown offers full roadside assistance and recovery within the cost of renting a vehicle. Further information on roadside assistance is available at the counter prior to renting.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

In the event that your flight is delayed, please endeavour to contact Green Motion Sarajevo Downtown. In most cases, we monitor inbound flight information and as such we will reserve your car until you arrive for up to 2 hours from the original pick up time. It is important that you make direct contact with the branch if you feel that your delay will exceed 2 hours to avoid us treating the rental as a “no show” and us reselling the rental car.

What happens if I arrive at the rental office outside office hours?

Green Motion Sarajevo Downtown's opening hours are from 08:00 to 22:00. In the event that we receive no notification that your arrival has been delayed there is little we can do to facilitate your rental once the rental office is closed. In the event that we have received contact notifying us of your delay, you will be advised whether or not we can accommodate your late arrival and whether or not it will attract any out of hours or late fees.

Am I able to return my car before Green Motion Sarajevo Downtown opens?

You are not authorised to return your rental vehicle outside office hours unless prior agreement has been made noting that in the event that agreement has been authorised, it is subject to strict terms and conditions. Discover Sarajevo

Sarajevo is a historically significant city in Europe. The city is known for its religious diversity - it is where the western and eastern Roman split and where people from the west (Roman Catholic), east (Orthodox) and the south (Ottoman) met, integrated and lived amongst each other for centuries.

The city has now recovered – at least materially – from the damage caused by the Yugoslav Wars (1992 – 1995) and it is quickly becoming a tourist hot spot with a lot to offer visitors. During your stay in Sarajevo, we would recommend that you include the following destinations into your travel itinerary:

  1. Baščaršija (Old Town)
Baščaršija ("Old Town" in English), the oldest part of Sarajevo, is architecturally diverse and beautiful as well as being a lively hub of activity – bars, restaurants, shopping, stalls and cafes litter the street. The locals are friendly and you should definitely give the local coffee a try!
  2. War Tunnel Museum (Tunnel of Hope)
The tunnel was secretly constructed in March 1993 and completed in June 1993 under the codename “Objekt BD.” The tunnel was constructed to link the Butmir and Dobrinja neighbourhoods - one of which was inside Serbian siege lines and the other of which was outside. Also known as the Tunnel of Hope, the tunnel although a stark reminder of the country's struggles is also a beacon of faith and achievement.
  3. Latin Bridge (Latinska ćuprija / Principov)
The Latin Bridge is a historic Ottoman bridge which resides over the River Miljacka. It is amongst one of the oldest bridges in Sarajevo and is famous for the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria which took place on the northern side of the bridge in 1914. The bridge, regardless of its history, is beautifully constructed.
